Rum-soaked days in the sun on two Caribbean islands with two very different vibes. Antigua is small and vibrant; Barbados, much larger, has deep roots in world history.

On our first journey together to explore Ohio - where John’s family has deep roots - we circled the state in search of outdoor and cultural adventures, centered on a conference we attended in Columbus.

With the Bartram Inn in Palatka as our base camp, we spent four days with local naturalists and experts hiking, biking, and paddling to sites along the Bartram National Recreation Trail.

To keep cool in summer, head for the Great Lakes. Our journey through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and the nearby Petoskey Area combines rides on comfortable bike paths and vehicle-free roads with exploration of natural wonders, historic sites, and the arts.

On a two week road trip to Southwest Florida and the Florida Keys, we visited Key West twice and canvassed the waterways of Calusa culture in Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Punta Gorda, and Englewood.

An immersion in the outdoor culture of Duluth, Minnesota, on foot, followed by a road trip to the “Scandinavian Riviera” of small towns along Lake Superior’s North Shore.

Exploring the length of the Florida Keys by bike and stopping at natural attractions along the way, spending three days heading north along the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail.

Spending five days along Florida’s Adventure Coast before, during, and after our outdoor writers conference, we explored the region by foot, paddle, and bike.

When the rains come, it’s time to duck indoors. Our East Coast road trip for Fall 2018 pivoted from plans to go cycling to spending a great deal of time visiting museums and smaller parks.

Our first cruise together was on the decidedly elegant and romantic Nieuw Amsterdam out of Fort Lauderdale to the Caribbean, with stops at Half Moon Cay and Nassau. While a working trip, it was extremely relaxing.

Fall is the perfect season to visit Northwestern Oregon, the cusp of change transitioning from cool to cold weather, the skies surprisingly clear, and the mountains and valleys ablaze in a soft palette of autumn colors.

Touring Panama with John’s parents, we saw the increasing challenges of travel for the over-80 set through their eyes while exploring Central America for the first time in our lives.

Making two separate journeys through the Shenandoah Valley - one in the rain, one in the sun - we anchored ourselves with stays at both ends the region while seeking out museums (in the rain) and trails (in the sun).
