Superior's Edge

Things are rarely as they appear. Here on the edge of Lake Superior, even the edges aren't obvious. The dunes of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore sometimes sit atop high cliffs, like this one.

Things are rarely as they appear. Here on the edge of Lake Superior, even the edges aren't obvious. I first came to Grand Marais, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, during a Lake Huron Circle Tour by car that seems a lifetime ago. A hike to the dunes was a must after this remote UP village stole my heart.

Natural perfection happened - sky, water, sand, grass, and the light of late afternoon. At the edge of the landscape, the land ends, too ... it's about a 60 foot sheer drop down to a pebbled beach at the base of the giant dunes. Not a hike where you want to rush to the edge!
